Torso, 2024

Latex, pine
200 x 160cm

In Torso, Mackay uses found latex, embracing its unpredictable and resistant qualities to shape the work. The material’s fragility and elasticity are central to the process, requiring a physical wrestle that mirrors the body’s tension between strength and vulnerability. Stretching, folding, and layering the latex, Mackay sculpts a form that suggests the organic contours of a torso while remaining abstract. The latex retains traces of its manipulation, emphasising its transformation from discarded material to artefact. This process highlights the interplay between control and surrender, with the latex’s inherent properties shaping the outcome as much as the artist’s intention.
